Regional Training on Global and Regional Migration Governance Held for Western Balkan Institutions

A regional training on “Global and Regional Migration Governance” was successfully held at the Regional Migration Training Centre in Plandište on 13 and 14 May 2026. The training was organized within the framework of the project “Strengthening Regional Cooperation in Migration Management between the Western Balkans and Neighboring EU Member States, in Line with the EU Acquis and International Standards – MIRKO”, with the aim of strengthening institutional capacities and enhancing the knowledge of migration professionals in the Western Balkans region through the exchange of experiences, improvement of professional competencies, and promotion of regional cooperation.

The training was jointly delivered by trainers from the beneficiary institutions participating in the MIRCO project – the Ministry of Interior of Montenegro, the Ministry of Interior of North Macedonia, the Ministry of Security of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the Commissariat for Refugees and Migration of the Republic of Serbia – who had previously successfully completed the Training of Trainers programme within the project. The joint preparation and delivery of the training further highlighted the importance of regional cooperation, the exchange of professional knowledge and experience, as well as a sustainable approach to capacity building and strengthening professional networks in the field of migration management.

During the two-day training, participants had the opportunity to explore key concepts of global and regional migration governance, including policy coherence between migration and development policies, the Global Compact for Migration (GCM), regional migration initiatives, as well as the role of the European Union and key EU frameworks in the field of migration and asylum. Particular attention was given to translating global and regional policy frameworks into national and local migration governance contexts through interactive lectures, practical exercises and discussions aimed at fostering the exchange of experiences and good practices among institutions from the region.

The training brought together representatives of the beneficiary institutions participating in the MIRCO project from the Western Balkans, as well as representatives of the Ministry for Human Rights and Refugees of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The participation of representatives from various relevant institutions further contributed to strengthening interinstitutional cooperation, regional dialogue and the exchange of experiences in the field of migration and asylum management.
