The second session of the Steering Committee for the project “Promoting Evidence-Based Migration Management to Harness the Development Potential of Migration” was held on November 13, 2024. The Steering Committee is co-chaired by the Commissariat for Refugees and Migration and the UN Resident Coordinator in Serbia. The meeting focused on reviewing the implementation of project activities and defining the plan for the next period.
Deputy Commissioner Svetlana Velimirović emphasized the importance of UN system support for Serbia in the field of migration management. She noted that this support will significantly contribute to strengthening the administrative and professional capacities of the state administration.
The project’s key contributions include:
- Developing new training curricula for civil servants, which will be conducted at the Migration Training Center in Plandište.
- Improving data collection, processing, and analysis on migration at both national and local levels.
- Enhancing the capacities of local self-governments in migration management.
- Strengthening cooperation with the academic community to improve evidence-based policymaking relevant to migration management in Serbia.
Migration management is a complex, comprehensive, and multi-institutional process that requires effective coordination between national and local levels, as well as proper data collection and analysis. This ensures that evidence-based public policies are developed to maximize the development potential of migration.
The project is jointly implemented by the Commissariat for Refugees and Migration and four United Nations agencies (IOM, UNICEF, UNDP, and UNHCR), with funding from the UN Multi-Partner Trust Fund for Migration (MPTF).
