The reform of the migration and asylum policy envisaged by the Pact on Migration and Asylum is a historically important step. It provides the EU with a legal framework and instruments for more effective management of external borders, the establishment of fast and effective asylum and return procedures, and the introduction of strict protective measures. It introduces a fair and effective system of solidarity and responsibility for the collective management of migration, so that no member state is left alone in situations of great pressure.
